A mezzanine floor is built over space that already exists. If you want more space and don’t want to do major renovating, a mezzanine floor is a good option. Mezzanine floors make use of empty ceiling space and are useful for storage, particularly if you didn’t have a lot of space to begin with. It’s infinitely safer not having a cluttered floor where people could trip and achieving this through the extra space provided by a mezzanine floor. Installing mezzanine flooring will increase the value of your property and with factories for example will attract a larger number of buyers who are keen to have lots of space for machinery or employee workspace.
An alternative to mezzanine floors is to do a loft conversion if the building has a loft. Apart from this alternative being expensive and requiring lots of time to complete, it might also lead to people who utilise the building needing to relocate whilst work is going on so that health and safety rules are not violated. There will be a lot of dust and noise which will make it virtually impossible to work or live in the building during the loft conversion.
A second alternative to mezzanine flooring is building an extension but this too is a pricey option that will take a while to implement and may force people to relocate for some or all of the extension-building duration. Additionally it is significantly harder to obtain planning permission for an extension than for a mezzanine floor. Installing cupboards or lockers is an option for obtaining more space. These items will take up floor space however, which leaves less space for people to move freely. Also bear in mind that you’ll need to leave room for the cupboard/locker doors to open, so further space is taken up. Things such as desks could not be put in front of the cupboards as they would need to be shifted out the way each time you needed to open the cupboards. Smaller items could potentially be kept in front of the cupboard space but they too would have to get moved when you wanted access to the cupboard, which would be a tiresome thing to do often.
You can add shelving to provide more space but it will be difficult to reach items on the top of shelves, particularly if they are high shelves. To reach the top shelves may necessitate the use of ladders, which people could potentially fall off of and thereby hurt themselves or others nearby. Floor space is also taken up by the shelves themselves. Another option is to rent storage space or rent further office space if required. This can be an expensive option, necessitating monthly payments or a big annual payment, which is potentially difficult for businesses to work around budget-wise. This option is also inconvenient in terms of having to travel to the rented location to access whatever you have stored there and inefficient if you’re stretching your business over two locations potentially quite far apart.
In conclusion it is apparent that mezzanine flooring is the superior alternative for obtaining space.
